Miyajima Gorge

Up in the mountains of Oyabe, a hush falls over the world, save for sounds like bird songs and the waterfalls that run through this spectacular gorge. These waterfalls are along a hiking trail, making this an excellent destination for lovers of the great outdoors: the trail is paved, too, making it welcoming for even relatively inexperienced trekkers. The route also passes by other distinctive features, such as the deep Ryugu Pool (home to a dragon who watches over the people of the town, according to legend) and even a replica of the Little Mermaid statue found in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Though Miyajima Gorge is beautiful all year round, it just might be at its best in November or early December, when the autumn colors reach their peak — and when it’s cool enough out to best enjoy sumptuous meals and warm baths at the nearby hot spring resort, after a day spent walking through the great outdoors.
